Shearmans wath, West Ashby.
Got there at first light this morning to look for the pectoral sandpiper, found by local patch birder Michael Harrison. It was really misty and not a lot could be seen, though some piping green sandpipers were promising. The mist cleared only slowly and I glimpsed the pec at 4:47am. There are no hides here and the birds flush very easily so a bit of fieldcraft is necessary. The bird would disappear into vegetation if approached. I found the roadside the best place to view from, looking through gaps in the hedge. I got some gold standard photos. Ha! Only kidding, these digi-scoped pics were taken with scope and camera both set to max magnification. You can see what it is though, as they say.
Also here were five or six green sandpipers, a greenshank, two snipe (an ad and a juv.), oystercatcher and a family of shelducks.
Calling in at Kirkby on Bain, a couple of female garganeys showed nicely along with a purring turtle dove.
Got back home for breakfast by 8:30 am. Not bad.
