Just spent a week in glorious weather mainly based on the island of Corfu. This wasn’t meant to be a birding holiday but I obviously took along my bins and cameras. Not much close to our base although we did have a couple of Cetti’s in the hotel gardens plus a couple of Wood Warblers along the beach and a Eleanora’s Falcon along the cliff tops. A few late Dragonflies locally as well and some attractive Bush Crickets (unidentified as yet). Lake Korission was a trip out and here we spotted the flock of Greater Flamingos plus the bonus of four species of wader, Common Sandpiper, Ringed Plover, Little Stint and a pair of juvenile Dunlin on a small exposed weed bank. Plenty of Little Egrets as well, many of which appeared to be in conflict. The Lefkimmi salt lagoons were another stop. It was baking hot here so I didn’t stop for long but got several Stonechats, Zitting Cisticola, Great White Egret, Greater Flamingos, seven Black-winged Stilts and around 500 Yellow leg and Black Headed Gulls plus a small number of Common Tern. Apart from these Gulls/Terns very little sea birds were seen except a few solo Audouin’s Gulls and half a dozen Yelkouan Shearwaters. The Highlight of the trip though was seven Grey Wagtails a mile offshore flying towards the island of Antipaxos, just skipping over the white-crested 2 metre wave tops!
