After my volunteer shift yesterday at Langford, I headed north as a black scoter had been found off Redcar. Thinking that this one would stick out like a saw thumb, the flock of c200 scoters were scanned but after twenty mins or so I still hadn’t seen it! I was thinking is it me?The flock wasn’t even very far out but it wasn’t easy viewing with the waves obscuring the birds some of the time and lots were diving. Suddenly I noticed it, and it did indeed stand out well. I’m assuming that it was one of the birds that had its head tucked in, sleeping before I clocked it.
This was a great ‘grip back’ for me. A few years back I dipped one in Northumberland owing to a sea fret which lingered for the whole weekend we were up there.
